I programmed keys to 4 Audi TT's & a 2003 Ibiza yesterday & added 0 to the beginning. The mk5 Golf i did at same time as the Ibiza was already a 5 digit SKC starting with 1 so obviously a 0 wouldn't be added! I'd go with the mk2, the mk1 has a lot of problems and they're usually beater cars and the ones in good condition are going as collectors cars now, if you tend to buy one get ready to replace a failed transmission and don't buy the vert.
